SUBJECT: Proposal for emergency notification at Midwestern State University.

Purpose
The purpose of this proposal is to study the existing or non-existing information about emergency notification around Midwestern State University.

Summary

Midwestern State University was founded in 1922, and since then has grown from a local junior college to a regional state university serving a wide and varied public. MSU has a reputation of offering high-quality education, all-round in athletes and most of all provides a safe atmosphere for both students and faculty. MSU takes pride in the safe atmosphere it brings and how fast they can relay emergency notifications, whether it is via text, email, tv, radio, or word of mouth.

As we all know, it is a hassle trying to figure out if classes have been cancel or still resume for the day during special events. A survey was conducted to see if students and faculty knew about the different types of ways notifications are sent out. In fact, some students say that they have never heard of some of the notifications and they just rely on word of mouth to see what the outcome is. This tends to cause huge confusions for many students and faculty during severe weather conditions.

Because of the lack of knowledge of emergency notifications we began our research by taking a survey of random students in the student center at MSU. The survey asked a variety of questions ranging from knowing about the different types of notifications to how to improve the notification system. Through the information collected from the survey and research, we were able to see that MSU lacked information on what to do in case of natural disasters. we would begin the calculating the cost of the new notification system and how to get the new system up and running.

To perform this research and present a report on our findings, we estimate that we would require 20 hours and $8 each person in the next 3 months, for the total cost of $680. The notification team would consist of Rosy Ofoegbu, Adrian Van Buren, Neal Carr, and Gillian Harden. If you were to accept this proposal, we would begin our reseach immedidately and submit a complettion report. The completion report would include the details of our research and recommendation for the new emergency notification system.

Introduction

We are seeking approval for a project to study the effectiveness of a new emergency notification program at MSU. The current emergency notification system for MSU lacks in many ways such as lack of information about weather warnings and natural disasters. Students and faculty are not being provided an adequate update when there is bad weather lurking in the vicinity. Students have to look for updates on the daily news weather channel, rely on word of mouth, or text messages from friends that are not as accurate as a new program at MSU would be.

MSU is an excellent Division II university in this country and to have students say they are unaware of what to do in case of an emergency or natural disaster when it happens, does not meet MSU standards. MSU takes pride in maintaining a safe atmosphere for its students and faculty. Our group is proposing a new emergency notification system for MSU, one that will ensure the future safety of all students and faculty.

Figure 1
In figure 1 shows the majority who answered the survey questions and most everyones strongly agreed that there is not adequate information made available for emergency notifications.

Proposed Tasks
With your approval, we will perform the following tasks to determine if MSU presents emergency notification procedures to students and staff. And iof students and staff members are aware of what do in case of emergencies as well as where to find the proper precautions.

1. Investigate the extent of the problem by determining if MSU provides and advertises emergency notication procedures or if there is lack of information about emergency notifications.

2. Interview random students and staff members on campus to see if they have knowledge of what to do incase of on campus emergencies.

3. Make up a survey and present it to students and staff members. The survey will contain questions testing their knowledge of information on emergency situations and what precautions to take. Also questions of where emergency protocol is provided.

4. We will perform research to determine if MSU provides emergency information. By checking and searching The MSU website for emergency information. As well as looking into the student handbook to see if it has anything on the subject matter.

5. Finally we will prepare a recommendation report that explains the lack of advertised emergency notification as well as the lack of knowledgeable students and staff members. As well as our research methods. This will be submitted to by a specific date.

The lack of information for emergency alerts and notifications on MSU's campus. I will study and gather information pertaining to students and staff on campus at Midwestern State University about emergency notifications and alerts. Is emergency information protocol advertised and promoted around campus in case of emergencies. Are students and staff aware of what to do and what actions to take during emergency situations. We'll gather this information through researching in different ways such as surveys, interviews, searching MSU's handbook and website to see if the information is provided.
