Week Two-Using MS Word 2007This is a featured page

Tasks for Week Two

  • Read Chapters 3 and 4.

In-class Activity 1: Reviewing Tool

  1. Download A2Wordfile_MSUcode (attached to this page). You will use this document for two activities, culminating in assignment A2.
  2. Review the document for grammatical errors. Notice the errors that Word's spell checker and grammar checker do and do not catch.
  3. Edit the A2Wordfile document using the Reviewing tool in Word following these steps:
  • Click on the Microsoft Office button (logo in the upper left corner) and click on Word options.
  • Change the user name to your name and initials.
  • Reviewer 1 will change the name and initials of Boise State University to Midwestern State University wherever they occur in the document. Save the document as A2Wordfile_reviewer1 and email it to the next member of your group.
  • Reviewer 2 will change the header information to indicate the receiver as MSU Provost Dr. Alisa White and the sender as Professor Sue Henson, and to reflect the current date. Save the document as A2Wordfile_reviewer2 and email it to the next member of your group.
  • Reviewer 3 will correct three errors NOT caught by spell checker/grammar checker. Save the document as A2Wordfile_group# (add your group #) and email it as an attachment to the other two members of your group and to the instructor at hensonmsu@gmail.com. I should be able to see all 9 changes from 3 different users in the document.

In-class Activity 2: Using Styles, Creating a TOC

  1. Download and open the final corrected version of A2Wordfile_MSUcode which your group completed for Activity 1. (If time does not permit, you may use the original file). You will now apply Word styles to the headings in this document.
  2. Under the Home tab, you see 5 groups: Clipboard, Font, Paragraph, Styles, and Editing. Click on the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the Styles group to view the Styles menu.

4. Follow the instructions attached below to create new styles and apply them to your document. Consult your text or the video linked below for more guidance. Save and submi the assignment as instructed.

In-Class Activity 3: Challenges for Collaboration (instructions for online class)

  1. Take the "Communications Style Inventory" attached below. DO NOT share results with your group (yet).
  2. Read Case 4 in your text and compose a response to Allison under your group's topic in WebCT discussion.
  3. After everyone has posted, discuss the responses and reach a consensus about the group's course of action. Do not try to reach consensus too quickly; consider the questions which follow the case in the text. .
  4. Have one person write a short memo for the group describing how the group will handle the situation and post it to the group's discussion.
  5. Finally, share the results of the Styles Inventory. Do the results seem valid to you? In this short exercise, could you guess each member's type?.
